防府天満宮／日本最初の天神さま Hofu Tenmangu Shrine / Japan's first Tenjin shrine

●茶室 芳松庵　Tea room “Hosho-an”
菅原道真公はお茶に関する故実を調査、研究され世間に喫茶の習慣を広められ茶聖菅公と称せられました。庭内の一角には勤皇の志士達が密議を交わした史跡暁天楼も建っています。是非、緑豊かな庭園の四季の移ろいをお楽しみいただきながら、美味しいお抹茶とお菓子をお召し上がりください。
Sugawara Michizane referred to as “Tea Saint Sugawara” researched and studied the historical facts related to tea, spreading the habit of tea drinking to all Japan.In a corner of the garden stands the historic building Gyotenro, where loyalists to the emperor held secret meetings. Please enjoy the changing seasons of the lush garden while savoring delicious matcha and sweets.
●御神木　The sacred tree
境内にはほぼ等間隔に並んでクスの巨木が3本あり、その中心をなすこの楠が御神木です。
樹齢は推定で800年。幹周が5.6ｍ、高さ27.5ｍ、葉張36ｍの巨木は、樹勢・樹形とも美しく周防一の美楠の巨樹です。天満宮の生命力溢れる木霊を宿しています。
There are three giant camphor trees spaced equally apart within the precincts of the shrine.The central camphor tree among them is revered as sacred. The tree is estimated to the 800 years old with a trunk circumference of 5.6 meters, a height of 27.5meters, and a canopy spread of 36 meters. It is the most beautiful giant camphor tree in Suo, unmatched in both vigor and splendor. It is inhabited by the vibrant spirit of the trees of Tenmangu Shrine.
 
●春風楼　Shunpuro
春風楼は文政五年（1822）長州藩十代藩主毛利斎煕が五重塔の建立を思い立ち、塔の設計を現在の重層の楼閣様式へ変更して明治六年に完工しました。この楼の床下の木組は着工当初の塔の一層軒下に使用すべき組物を使用したもので、当時の面影を偲ぶ未完の五重の塔です。ここからの四季折々の絶景は春風楼の名にふさわしい場所となっています。
In 1822, Narihiro Mohri, the 10th lord of the Choshu domain, decided to build a five-story pagoda. The pagoda design was changed to the current multi-storied building style, and construction was completed in 1873.The original five story structure was not completed as intended. The bottom wooden framework under the floor of the tower was constructed using components originally intended for under the first eaves. What stands today is an unfinished pagoda that recalls the appearance of the time.The breathtaking beautiful scenery throughout the seasons from here has become a fitting place for name of ”shunpuro”
